Historical Notes
2002: A Contemptible Year

The year began with a full head of steam. Steam which I blew off with regular weekly bursts as events in Afghanistan became as chaotic as opponents of the war had predicted; as the President continued to embarrass us abroad while stripping our basic protections from government and corporate malfeasance at home; as hypocrisy from the homophobic crowd turned vicious during the Catholic Priest Pedophile Scandal; and let's not forget the failed attempted coup in Venezuala that has the BushAdmin's fingerprints all over it.

You may notice a gap from May until July. Emotionally, this steam venting got scalding. I took a break. I found ways of tempering my, er, temper. And I switched from inking with brush to inking with a fountain pen.

By year's end, the prospect of war in Iraq and nuclear confrontation with North Korea seemed somehow manageable. Enraging, horrifying and frightening. But cartooning-wise, manageable.
