Jesus on a pogo stick, I drew Sarah Palin again. Seriously, this has got to stop. But her parallel bizarro world keeps having consequences on our own real world, like the recent push against a moderate Republican congressional candidate in New York State. I don’t know how they do things in big ol’ Alaska, but most of the Republicans I knew in New York were of the moderate kind. They don’t need no carpet-bagging movement conservatives coming from outside and interfering. Hence, Scozzafava’s endorsement of her former Democratic rival.

Anyhoo, Palin’s continued presence in political life – including her $1.25 million ghost-written memoir – goes against logic and decency. As does Maurice Greenberg’s resurgence on Wall Street, the Barney Frank “TARP on steroids” bill, and the carrion-devouring take-overs that make folks like Warren Buffett only more powerful.

UPDATE: Aww, even The Palin has limits. New York’s 23rd rejected her endorsed conservative candidate and elected the first Democrat to win that seat since, um, before the Civil War. Michael Steele may brush this off, but it should be apparent that the major Republican wins last night in Virginia and New Jersey were by moderates responding to local politics. However, so long as the movement conservatives have Maine to crow about, they won’t notice that voters are rejecting their bullshit.

Oh, that would be ours. In a parallel universe I suppose people are just laughing at Parallel Palin, forcing her into hiding, where she lives out a life of disgrace. And Parallel Grassley is forced to write out his words and eat them on live TV.

In the third panel, that bus is the real deal:

From a WaPo article about the powerful interests tossing gasoline on the fire.

Honestly, I try to ignore Glenn Beck. But he’s been on a roll lately. Calling Obama a racist, then a communist, then joking about poisoning House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, then imploring his followers not to do anything violent based on his ranting. Obviously Rush Limbaugh felt the competition, so threw in his comparison of Obama to Hitler. Not to be outdone, Palin facebooked hysteria about “death panels” (which Glenn found reasonable), then felt compelled to issue her own admonition against violence. “See, Glenn, my followers can be destructively crazy, too!” One dude even brought his gun.

Meanwhile the object of their attacks is already willing to chuck the public option off the table, leaving us with dubious “co-ops.” I saw this coming when Chris Matthews was braying about it a month ago. And so here we are. Hopey hopey changey changey.

Perhaps it is unfair of me to lump “Obama Girl” with Sam “Joe (Not a) Plumber (Nor a) War Correspondent” Wurzelbacher and She Who Can’t Stop Talking. After all, Amber Lee Ettinger works hard at a job she is actually qualified for, shows some competence, and can elicit an intended laugh. Her phenomenon still makes me wince.

While I regret the return of Sarah Palin to my little corner of the Web, please note that this cartoon the first appearance of the so-called “Plumber” in my work. I hope it’s the last.

Reporters and pundits have developed a verbal tic when discussing what Matt Damon has described as the actuarial likelihood of a President John McCain kicking the bucket in his first term. They insist on interjecting the phrase “God forbid” into the speculation; as in, “If anything – God forbid! – were to happen to John McCain….” Yet whenever I hear enthusiastic Palin apologists use the phrase, I can’t help but expect them to add – “Wink!”

One of the weirder aspects of Governor Sarah Palin’s persona that has emerged in the last week and a half is her avid love of shooting animals from planes. I guess this is big sport up in Alaska. I don’t oppose hunting per se — as a meat eater, I have respect for anyone who has distanced themselves from the lethal process whereby animals are turned into food. But flying overhead as an animal flees in terror over a white canvas of snow doesn’t seem very “sporting.”

Salon reports that in 2007 the Governor went so far as to offer a bounty for every hacked off wolf paw a hunter turns in to the state government. Alas, one of those party-pooper activist judges ruled she didn’t have the authority to offer such rewards and put the kibosh on the program. Nonetheless, her office still encourages the “culling” of wolves with the aid of Cessnas and high-powered rifles. Why? Because, she claims, the wolves are killing the caribou that subsistence hunters and Native Americans rely on for food. How thoughtful and compassionate of her to consider the needs of indigenous peoples. Except that this claim is not based in science:

Last year, 172 scientists signed a letter to Palin, expressing concern about the lack of science behind the state’s wolf-killing operation. According to the scientists, state officials set population objectives for moose and caribou based on “unattainable, unsustainable historically high populations.” As a result, the “inadequately designed predator control programs” threatened the long-term health of both the ungulate and wolf populations. The scientists concluded with a plea to Palin to consider the conservation of wolves and bears “on an equal basis with the goal of producing more ungulates for hunters.”

Apparently Palin wasn’t fazed. Earlier this year she introduced state legislation that would further divorce the predator-control program from science. The legislation would transfer authority over the program from the state Department of Fish and Game to Alaska’s Board of Game, whose members are appointed by, well, Palin. Even some hunters were astounded by her power play.

The legislation would give Palin’s board “more leeway without any scientific input to do whatever the hell they basically wanted,” Mark Richards, co-chair of Alaska Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, wrote in an e-mail. The legislation is currently stalled in the Alaska state Senate.

Not that I’d expect a person who ascribes to creationism and doubts human agency in global warming to give a crap about science. I swear, she’s like Dubya in high heels. And wielding a weapon.

CNN has spent all of Labor Day wondering whether the news that Sarah Palin’s 17-yr-old daughter’s pregnancy is a “political bombshell” or “a family matter that is nobody’s business,” to borrow the delicate phrasing of Larry King.

There is a third option. To quote Bill Murray in Meatballs, “It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter! It just doesn’t matter!” Repeat until drunk.*

Here are aspects of John McCain’s selection of Palin as his Vice President that actually matter: Palin is a Creationist; doesn’t believe that global warming is caused by humans; doesn’t think the oil industry should be inhibited by potential polar bear extinction; is against abortion even in cases of rape or incest; and has the foreign policy experience of a dog catcher.

Sorry for the lack of new material last week. Every last week of August I hit a weird funk that makes it difficult for me to do any cartooning. Instead, I sat around watching the Democratic National Convention. Had I done a cartoon relevant to that event, it probably would have portrayed me giving Wolf Blitzer the middle finger. Was anyone really that shocked that the vast majority of Hillary Clinton supporters united around Barack Obama as the party’s nominee? If there were any hold outs by the end of last Thursday, Friday morning’s news regarding Sarah Palin probably drew them into the fold.

Or pushed them into the Cynthia McKinney camp. Hey, good luck with that.

*Thanks to Grimmtooth for correcting my original attribution of the quote to John Belushi in Animal House. I should turn in my Juvenile Humor card now.
