Alex Chilton

Earlier this week I intended to caricature the current Pope, who is the focus of a new child rape scandal in the Catholic Church, but then on St. Patrick’s Day, Alex Chilton died of a stroke. He was 59, a still too young age to leave the mortal plane, especially given his energy and vitality up to the day he died. So in tribute to him I dedicate this small part of the vast Web to him.

The drawing is based on his Big Star period, specifically this great YouTube video I stumbled upon as I binge viewed his music via concert footage.

Here he is in 1993 on a revival tour with a new Big Star line up.

And in 2006.

And in 2009.

Still sounded amazing. So long, Alex.

Some of these videos remind me of the time I saw Alex Chilton play the Black Cat here in D.C. That must have been 10 years ago, at least. Brilliant stuff!
