Feed the Beast

No, it’s not a subtle toon, is it.

I meant to draw and post this a couple weeks ago, when it would have been more timely, as a Pentagon internal report on Afghanistan prepared for President Obama was leaked to the press. The call for escalating the war seems as pointless as the calls for escalating the war in Iraq. Or will someone seriously say, “The Surge worked!” with a straight face?

You may have noticed a real slacking of the updating around here. Sorry about that. More personal stuff. I won’t go into it. But I will be updating once a week for awhile as I try to get back on track. Eventually I aim to resume the Tuesday-Thursday schedule, probably after the first of the year. So for the rest of this one, expect a new toon every Wednesday. Split the difference, I reckon.

Subtlety is not appropriate for this topic. Americans on average don’t give a shit what happens “over there” and some “proud patriots” are excited to see their little GI Jane or Joe go over there and fight for “freedom.” The ugliness of the occupation is not something they have to live with. We should be ashamed of ourselves that it’s lasted this long.

wow, man. Shades of Honore Daumier. Nice one.

Daumier was a serious innovator of the medium. I wish more current political cartoonists had such chutzpah.

FSM_Ed: The current debate drives me crazy. After 8 years, what more can an increase in troops possibly solve? It’s wasting lives of civilians and soldiers alike.

    Great comic! Glad you’re back.

What in hell does it take for those people in that alternate universe in the teevee — even the “liberals” among them — to see the obvious?

How can they believe that having our troops slaughter more people to prop up our corrupt and hated satrapy can possibly accomplish anything other than compounding our heinous crime against the Afghan (and Pakistani) people, while hastening our own empire down the path of the Soviet Union?

More troops? More targets. I keep flashing on that scene from “Return of the Living Dead”: Police are sent in to a graveyard overrun by zombies, and are promply surrounded and slaughtered. A zombie walks up to a police car, picks up the radio microphone, leering wickedly, and croaks, “Send more cops!”

One of my all time favorite movies. I wish I had thought of that analogy. :-)

Oh, and: Thanks all for the kind words. I am really bad at expressing gratitude, but I really appreciate the feedback. Of course, intelligent criticism is welcome, too. Or even idiot criticism, as that’s an opportunity for a different kind of response.
