The Fundamentals
Senator John McCain’s notorious comments regarding the soundness of economic fundamentals was, admittedly, low hanging fruit. It took the Obama campaign less than 24 hours (probably 12) to use footage of McCain’s comments as the basis of an attack ad. They have been giddy ever since.
Despite the opportunistic glory it provided, we should not forget that these comments were not a “gaffe.” They are part of an ideology that views the cheapness of labor and the ease of its exploitation as the strongest fundamental going, the very reason wealth is generated. So I’m not surprised that McCain doesn’t take the current situation seriously beyond flattering bromides about the ingenuity and dedication of working Americans. His future is secure. Albeit brief.
