Reporters and pundits have developed a verbal tic when discussing what Matt Damon has described as the actuarial likelihood of a President John McCain kicking the bucket in his first term. They insist on interjecting the phrase “God forbid” into the speculation; as in, “If anything – God forbid! – were to happen to John McCain….” Yet whenever I hear enthusiastic Palin apologists use the phrase, I can’t help but expect them to add – “Wink!”
